Public library leaders and changing society [Recurs electrònic] / John Budd
In: Public library quarterly Vol. 26, nº 3 (2007), p. 1-14Summary: The mission of enhancing and fostering democracy has, correctly, been a mainstay of public library missions for many years. This mission has even included the goal of changing society, especially by enhancing egalitarian access to democratic participation. Such an ambitious goal requires a deep and clear understanding of politics in the United States, and particularly of democracy. This paper includes a review of some of the challenges that accompany an understanding of what democracy is and how it is practiced today, with the objective of initiating a conceptual reform in public librarianship. A revised taxonomy of essential ideas is proposed here as a step towards accomplishing the goal of changing society.
