The aim of the study was to produce a demographic profile of volunteers in the sector to serve as a primary benchmark, enabling Resource to target developmental priorities. The study focused on volunteers in the three separate domains of museums, archives and libraries in order: • To define the existing population of volunteers in the sector and the range of options within that population • To identify points of coincidence and difference among volunteers across the three domains covered by Resource’s remit • To identify areas requiring particular development in order to encourage a greater involvement from under-represented sectors of the community • To examine ways in which the present arrangements can be made more effective, with reference to the needs of museums, archives and libraries, their staff, both paid and unpaid, and users • To examine how Resource might encourage individual volunteers to take up developmental opportunities where offered and the implementation of good volunteer management practice • To report and make recommendations as appropriate.
