Publication details: Newcastle : Centre for Urban & Regional Development Studies (CURDS), [2001]Description: 127 pOnline resources: Summary: This is the final report of the study ‘Culture Cluster Mapping and Analysis’ undertaken by a team from the Centre for Urban and Regional Development Studies in collaboration with Comedia Consultants1. The Study was carried out in six weeks from the middle of August to the end of September 2001. The aim of the study was to provide the basis for the development of a Creative Industries Cluster Development Strategy. The creative industries represent a stunningly diverse set of economic activities, institutional forms and working patterns, rivalled by few other areas of the economy. Indeed, each of the segments of the creative industries could, on its own, easily support a mapping study of this kind. This report tries to capture some of that diversity and do justice to the various segments of the creative industries. However, at points we are forced, by limitations of space and time, to make generalisations. These will, as is the nature of generalisations, have exceptions. We hope, however, that the thrust of our arguments will stand. The development of successful clusters of competitive advantage is, as all writers on the subject would agree, and long a complex process based on the interaction of firms, government and other agencies (coupled with a hefty dose of chance), over a lengthy period of time. It is, furthermore, a process that can only be led by those directly involved in the relevant activity. This study can, therefore, only be regarded as an incentive to start a process of indeterminate length. This said, it will, hopefully, provide the basis for making such a start.
