Summary: It’s a Material World: Caring for the public realm is a call to arms. It is also a blueprint for the future, developed through collaboration with heritage and museum leaders, conservators, professional associations and educators concerned about the future of conservation. (…) One thing is clear: the conservation profession has to widen its scope, to look at the broader role conservation plays and embrace public engagement. Conservators have begun to build a role of wider value in society, evidenced by the many examples of public engagement in this report. This is certainly true at Historic Royal Palaces, where public communication has been integrated into every conservator’s job and programmes such as ‘Ask the Conservator’ have been developed to engage visitor interest in our charitable cause. We at Historic Royal Palaces depend on a highly skilled team of collection and building conservators. We welcome this report; we support a national strategy for change and we support broadening the professional role of the conservator. All conservation organisations, conservators, professional associations, research centres, education providers and government policy makers need to work together to open new ways to foster conservation. This will ensure its valuable role in society is strengthened, so that our material heritage remains meaningful for society today and in the future. (Font: Prefaci)
