Nowadays, when we talk about public space, we do not just refer to the physical space that surrounds the museum, but also online networks generated by new technologies of communication as the Internet. This new space, rather than creating a substitute for a real museum visit, has the potential to extend and enrich the museum experience letting the audience experience across both, the physical and virtual spheres. Museums have been working on continue visitors' experience beyond the museum's walls since the popularization of the World Wide Web in the 1990s decade, but now we are in a new scenario: since 2004 we are talking about Web 2.0, a second-generation of Internet-based services that let users collaborate and share information online in ways previously unavailable. Connectivity, collectivity and participation are the key concepts of the new public space. This new public space situates museums in a wider socio-political context of openness completely new. How museums respond to the potential of the Web as an independent presentation and distribution platform? How the museum practice can be transformed by open participation in distributed networks? The aim of the thesis is to study the museum as a key space of modernity implicated in addressing the changing character of experience of visitors through network systems; the ways of opening up the museum ugh connectivity, collectivity and participation. The research is based in the study of steve project, a collaborative research project exploring the potential of social tagging to improve access to museum collections.Item type | Current library | Collection | Call number | Copy number | Status | Date due | Barcode | |
