Summary: Recent developments in film theory have challenged the aesthetics of realism which has dominated marxist writings on art. They attempt to bring marxist aesthetics into alignment with contemporary modernism. This work is a critical examination of these theories, especially those influenced by Louis Althusser. It argues that marxism is based upon a realist theory of knowledge, but that this does not necessarily lead to realism in art. Realism tends to view art as a special kind of knowledge. But questions of pleasure, of audience involvement, and of politics, cut across the question of its relationship to knowledge and reality. (Font: Editor)
