Summary: The activities of myriad .small clubs, groups, associations and federations have long provided the bedrock of everyday cultural and leisure activity in Britain. Metal detection, natural history, swimming, cycling, allotments, military modelling, judo, aquarism... The scale and complexity of such activity probably far outweighs all other forms of community action, yet we know very little about it. Conventional approaches to self-management focus almost exclusively on business enterprises, co-ops, trade unions, and local political parties. Organizing Around Enthusiasms is a book about the unexplored world of the hobby. Far from being another recitation of organizational structure, Organizing Around Enthusiasms places questions of culture and meaning at the centre of its analysis. The authors also question statutory attempts to 'develop' this independent activity, outlining the dangers and futility of trying to incorporate it into bureaucratic and centralised programmes of 'voluntary' involvement in 'leisure'.
