The Social situation of performing artists in the United Kingdom / by Bill Granger
Publication details: [London] : [Polytechnic of Central London Faculty of Management Studies], 1986Description: 77 fSummary: This report gives an assessment of existing information on the social situation of performing artists in the United Kingdom, and presents additional unpublished information from an original analysis of secondary source material. The main sources of information used in this report are the published reports of the Census of Population (1951-1981), a special tabulation of the Labour Force Survey (1979-1985), membership information and pay rates from trade unions, and special surveys conducted by the Arts and Leisure Research Unit of the Polytechnic of Central London (1978-79). The analysis of data from these different sources encountered major problems of comparability. Nevertheless, a bread picture of the present situation and recent trends is still possible. The overall size of the performing arts labour force has until very recently expanded considerably from 1961, and in 1981 stood at between 40,000 and 55,000. A third are musicians, or whom only a small minority are women. Performing artists are young in comparison with other workers and are disproportionately located in the South East region. A majority of performing artists are self-employed, and unemployment rates exceed those for the UK as a whole; trends for both are upward. Total gross earnings for musicians in 1978 were roughly in line with those of all male workers in the UK, but earnings for other performing artists, especially women, were considerably less.
