Sponsorship
Publication details: London : Mintel, 1986Description: 167 pSummary: Sponsorship by businesses in the UK is booming and expenditure is now five times larger than it was in 1980. Expenditure in 1986 is forecast to reach £190 million. Although sponsorship has existed since the 1950s, it has been most visible over the last 15 years or so. The past five years in particular have seen tremendous strides made in both the expenditure on this form of promotional medium and the professionalism with which companies have gone about marketing their involvement and maximising the rewards from their initial investment. This report will concentrate on the UK sponsorship market. It is only a small part of what is a global industry, featuring many multi-national companies and brands, such as Coca-Cola, Marlboro and John Player. There are many different and varied definitions of sponsorship but, for the purposes of this report, Mintel defines it as follows:- “….The support of recreational activities be they events, organisations, individuals or competitions, by an outside body or person for the mutual benefit of both parties….” This report aims to cover the major areas of expenditure on sponsorship in the UK which come within the confines of the above definition.
