Summary: New communication and information technologies are now transforming economic, social, cultural and political life throughout the world. This book explores some of the theoretical, research and policy issues arising from such a transformation. The editor and contributors adopt a comparative approach from a range of social science perspectives to challenge many of the popular myths and futurologists' scenarios about the positive as well as the negative effects of the new technologies. Seminal studies in Part One explore theoretical perspectives related to the new media, examine media-centred versus society centred theories and offer a socio-economic model of information technology in the post-industrial, service society. Part Two takes a comparative look at policies and strategies in different industrialized societies, notably the United States, the United Kingdom and Japan. The effects of technological, rather than social, determinism, as well as the issue of unequal access to information technology are discussed. Deregulation in the United States and its effects on telecommunications and broadcasting policies at a national level are considered in Part Three in conjunction with the threat posed to individual and corporate privacy by international databanks. The final section, Part Four, presents a comparative overview of policies and approaches that have been adopted across a range of cultures and systems, from the diverse experience of Europe to Canada and Japan. These perspectives provide essential insight into emerging global trends, and suggest directions for future research. (Font: Editor)
