Summary: This book reports the results of the initial ICYC research study (see Ewbank & Papageourgiou, in press, for more comprehensive case studies from the ICYC popular music study). The fundamental question we ask here is whether there is a growing homogenization of the world's popular music or, alternatively, a continuing and perhaps even increasing diversity of song, styles, and forms. In effect our research tests the cultural imperialism hypothesis. We do not, however, look at the phenomena from the traditional perspective of how and where internationally distributed popular music is produced and then flows around the world. Instead we try to discover how this process affects and is perceived by local musicians, people who are immersed in overlapping international, national, and local contexts of production. We also attempt to understand how these societal influences are tempered by and interpreted through cultural and semiotic codes as well as individual musicians' experiences and creative talents. Because of our consideration of this large set of factors, our study constitutes an exploration of whether world cultural diversity can be expected to persist despite growing concentration within international cultural industries. For us the key to the persistence of musical diversity is the assurance that local productive opportunities will continue for musicians everywhere. We have presented our research results, observations, and conclusions as an integrated whole rather than as a series of separate, edited chapters. Reflections on theory, descriptions of local case studies, and interview data were produced by the entire ICYC team and are present throughout the book. (Font: Prefaci)
