Summary: As major players in society, museums see themselves not only as collectors of art and material culture but as agents for transmitting and defining culture. Contributors to this book examine the often controversial interactions between museums, festivals, tourism, and historic preservation projects and the communities they profess to represent and serve, demonstrating how the contested terrain of cultural representation both brings together and separates museums and communities. The essays illustrate struggles and collaborations among museums and communities. The topics discussed include the role of museums in civil society, the history of African American collecting and exhibiting, and experiments with more open museum-community dialogue. Such critical issues as ethnicity and class are examined in case studies of communities' attempts to assert their identities in museum settings. (Font: Editor)
