Summary: Once upon a time, in 1946, was the Golden Age of the British cinema, the age of Ealing and Anna Neagle. In this year cinema admissions stood at a massive 1600 million. Then carne television. By the late 1980s the box office had shrunk to a mere 50 million ticket sales a year, as video completed the decimation which television had begun. That at least is the received wisdom. As the authors of this new report on the film audience show, it isn't quite as simple. With the help of new data gathered from an extensive survey, David Docherty, David Morrison and Michael Tracey enquire into all aspects of the cinemagoing habit. Who goes, how often, with whom? How is cinemagoing affected by family status, age, class? Do people prefer to watch films on video? lf so, why? And just what do people get out of films anyway? This book is the first to attempt detailed answers to such questions. (Font: Editor)
