Dance spaces / by Mark Foley ; Edited by Fiona Dick

Summary: The performing of dance requires large amounts of space, and the space around the dancer affects the audiences' experience of dance. To be unable to see the dancers' feet or patterns created on the floor is like seeing only half the picture. Artists and audiences alike deserve the best possible spaces for the creation, rehearsal and performance of dance. I am grateful to architect Mark Foley for highlighting the need for good dance spaces, and for detailing the factors that make spaces fit for dance. I am also grateful to the dance companies and artists that contributed to the research and helped to make this document clear, authoritative and precise. Dance Spaces provides an invaluable guide for the planning of refurbishments, conversions and new buildings that will dramatically improve conditions for dancers, other artists, audiences and venue staff.
