Summary: Creating a free stage for confrontations of opinions, for stimulating thought on performing arts, supplying new ideas, unexpected thoughts... this is one of the most important mainsprings behind the Vlaams Theater Instituut and it is also one of the main thoughts underlying City of Cultures, a publication which is part of the IJsberg-series of the Institute. Via information and documentation, research and counselling, publications and presentations, the Vlaams Theater Instituut tries to create the framework in which performing arts can thrive and flourish. The Institute does not run away from difficult issues; for example: it has explored the role art plays in the social debate, and the position art takes with respect to the multicultural society, especially with respect to international politics and to intolerance. Every person who wishes to be active in the realm of art needs to give these issues some thought, needs to keep putting question marks behind his own points of view. These questions are inherent to the place art wants to occupy, and make us look for answers and react watchfully and openly, day after day. During the City-of-Cultures-conference, of which this book is a reflection, Peter Sellars was able to perfectly translate the conversations, which were often difficult and tense, making them more dynamic at the same time: the point of all this is that it is a struggle. And the more we make it our struggle, the more we deepen our positions as artists and human beings. Our task right now as artists, really at any time, is to find· a struggle and live there. And if you haven't noticed any struggles, then by all means choose another profession! This book includes a number of lectures given at this conference, which was organised by the Vlaams Theater Instituut and the Theater Instituut Nederland as a part of the first KunstenFESTN ALdesArts (Brussels, 1994). These artist's stories differ greatly. They are personal stories by different artists and theatre directors who all struggle with the same questions. Rather than solutions, you will be able to read how each of them is trying to build ways through this complicated matter by falling and getting up again... stories of doubt and hope. Undoubtedly, together they will be a sufficient amount of fuel for additional discussions. (Font: Prefaci)
