Summary: In recent years the material world has been impinging more and more obviously on the performing arts. There has been a real burgeoning of arts activity, but at the same time the prices of theatre seats have risen dramatically, financial pressures have threatened to close some of the world's major opera, ballet and drama companies, and the growing cost of the arts to the public purse has become headline news. The role and future of the performing arts is the subject of widespread discussion in the media, in parliament, at conferences and at public enquiries. What are the economic issues underlying this debate? In The economics of the performing arts David Throsby and Glenn Withers provide an extensive examination of the contribution that can be made by economic analysis to an understanding of the position of the performing arts in modern society. Drawing widely on the experience of Australia, Britain, Canada, New Zealand and the USA the book develops basic theories of the behaviour of arts firms, consumers and patrons and tests those theories against the contemporary evidence. The focus is on live and professional performing arts. The case for government support is thoroughly reviewed and the level and forms of public assistance are considered in depth. The authors have taken a highly original approach. Each chapter is divided into two sections. The first presents arguments and conclusions in a form which will appeal to the general reader. This is followed by a second section containing more formal analysis which will be of special interest to the professional economist. With its international coverage and its clear presentation, the book will be an important contribution to informed debate on a subject of increasing public controversy. (Font: Editor)
