Summary: The National Endowments: A critical symposium contains papers on the National Endowment for the arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities that were presented at a symposium held at New York University on November 17, 1993. This event was an important component of the conservative cultural counter-offensive reflected in the election returns of 1994. It was the first and only time conservative artists, intellectuals, and scholars wit personal experiences working with the endowments were able to discuss their ideas in a formal public setting. Today mucho what was said that Saturday afternoon in NYU law school's Greenberg Lounge seems prophetic. Both endowments have been in trouble with Congress, the press, ant the American people. Those who thought a Clinton victory would automatically revive the endowments did not look closely at what Marxists like to call "root causes" of their misfortunes. The NEA and NEH are stricken with the intellectual, moral, and structural ailments diagnosed on the page that follow. (Font: Editor)
