The Big foot : Museums and children with learning difficulties / Anne Pearson, Chitra Aloysius
Publication details: London : British Museum Press, cop. 1994Description: 95 pSummary: This publication makes a valuable contribution to an area of museum education which has so far been given little prominence. In concentrating on children with learning difficulties it highlights ways in which museum resources can be an exciting and powerful stimulus for their studies and personal development. The project on which the book focuses owes much to the innovative approach of the two authors and the willing support of the teachers whose pupils visited the British Museum. Above all the children are to be congratulated on the quality of their work. Their responses showed that with careful preparation, a clearly defined task and access to inspiring artefacts, they could become engrossed, begin to develop an awareness of past societies and use various media to record their impressions. The outcome was sometimes well beyond the expected level of achievement. At the same time the project shows the barriers to learning that can exist in museums for children with learning difficulties. Ways of overcoming them can be of benefit to all museum visitors. The main project was preceded and followed by seminars at the British Museum which helped to share examples of good work undertaken at the museum and elsewhere in England and the United States of America. Some of this work and more recent examples of learning strategies are ·also outlined. All of this should help to continue the process of sharing and encourage others to develop museum-based projects for children with learning difficulties. Many people in Great Britain and abroad will find this book of interest. Museum staff, teachers in mainstream and special schools, advisers and teacher trainers could explore how the approaches described here could be used more widely. In this way, education in museums will be experienced by more children and enrich the lives of those for whom learning is a particular challenge.
