Summary: This book has to do with sound as an artist's medium. It will help the reader analyze the dramatic values which can be achieved through the control of sound during a performance. It sets forth the devices and techniques by which this control is exercised. They apply to all types of stages. (...) The subtle and imaginative control of any substantial part of the audio component of a show has progressed little, and books and articles dealing with sound in the theatre neglect, to a large extent, such factors basic to the control of sound as architecture, scenery, the structure of the human voice and ear, and psycho-acoustics. But now the function of the sound designer is accepted, and the need for at least one person to be responsible for whatever is undertaken in sound control during a performance is recognized. With responsibility thus fixed, the control of sound may well improve -as did the visual component of shows with the advent of the lighting designer. (Font: Prefaci)
