The arts funding bodies have a key role to play in collecting and disseminating that information. This report marks an important milestone in that process. Using a wide range of official and unpublished sources, data have been collected from across the United Kingdom in order to provide an overview of trends in cultural funding and participation since 1986/87, the first year after the abolition of the Metropolitan Counties and the Greater London Council. While it is impossible to serve all of the statistical needs of the sector in a single publication, this report draws together data on key aspects of the cultural sector across a period of considerable change.
