Summary: What is cultural heritage worth? How much should be spent to preserve buildings, monuments or paintings? Which regulation-policy is most effective? Which incentives are generated by particular protection rules? Which criteria guide choices between rivalling protection aims? Such were the questions addressed by a colloquy of cultural economists that convened in Catania in 1995. The best papers of that colloquy are presented in this volume. Theoretical dimensions of defining and modelling cultural heritage are analyzed. Current heritage policies in Italy, France, England, the USA and Japan are reported and examined, new suggestions for more effective policies are presented. Among the authors are Francesco Forte, Bruno Frey, Dick Netzer, Alan Peacock and David Throsby. As cultural policy issues are gaining in relevance, answers will have to be found and solutions will have to be implemented. In that discussion, Economic Perspectives on Cultural Heritage is likely to become a point of reference. (Font: Editor)
