Series: Informes/Estudis ; 2Publication details: Paris : Unesco, 1980Description: 20, [8] pSummary: The meeting of the committee of experts convened by Unesco on "the place and role of the cultural industries in the cultural development of societies" was held in Montreal from 9 to 13 June 1980. The experts who took part in the meeting were invited in a personal capacity and came from the following countries: Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Cuba, Czechoslovakia, Finland, France, Indonesia, Israel, Italy, Japan, the Philippines, Poland, Senegal, Tanzania, the United '.Kingdom, the United States of America and Venezuela. Observers from several Canadian provinces and interested circles attended the meeting. (…) Mr. Makagiansar commented on the meeting's agenda, indicating the main problems in regard to the definition and scope of cultural industries their mode of operation, certain individual sectors, their effect on social groups, the particular problem of creative workers, phenomena of internationalization and possible ways of taking action. He expressed the hope that the experts would succeed in spelling out how the various problems arising with reference to cultural industries should be dealt with in terms of cultural and communication policies. He also expressed the hope that they would give their views on the relevant sections of the Draft Programme and Budget for 1981-1983 (21 C/5) which would be discussed at the twenty-first session of the General Conference. In conclusion, Mr. Makagiansar drew attention to the fact that analysis of the worldwide network of relations had brought to light the interdependence of human societies. In this respect cultural industries were the most obvious link between culture and communication, especially with reference to the problems in regard to the endogenous development of societies.
