Summary: This is the first version, comprising fourteen countries, of a long awaited reference work on cultural policies in Europe; the book we always missed when faced with pressing information inquiries or when trying to learn about the historical or administrative context, the legal framework or about current trends, facts, figures, strategies and meaningful examples on specific cultural policy matters in different European countries. In this regard, the Compendium can be considered as a reference document only, touching upon all these requests in a concise but not necessarily extensive manner. The intention of the project was to explicitly avoid making any judgements or conduct comparisons between respective national cultural policies, but rather to provide the basic informational tools that, in yet another step, allows one to engage in further analytical work at one's discretion - in conjunction, of course, with additional or original sources.
