Student attitudes and the european cultural dimension / François Massart-Pierard

By: Contributor(s): Series: Études secteur culturelPublication details: Brussels : Commission of the European Communities, 1979Description: 175 pSummary: Today crises are legion. There is no sector of social, economic or political activity - not a single one - without its "crisis": the economic crisis, crisis of civilization, energy crisis, labour or unemployment crisis; the crisis of the Western World, of Europe, of the university; the conflict of generations, the crisis of youth, of the birth-rate, of authority; the regional crisis, the crisis of the State, of the army, of the clergy. They are revealed in everyday life, in the press and in books. Academics, too, have become involved and are analysing the decline of Europe. At all events, discussion of these crises is usually centred on Europe. But is it really a crisis of Europe - or of the Western World? Are there really so many different crises? Rather, is there not a single reality underlying them all? And is this crisis genuine and capable of objective definition or is it not, on the contrary, psychological and, if so, to what extent? Is there no way out? All these questions are relevant. If we come to the conclusion that there exists but one crisis, it can only be a crisis of culture since we too easily forget that, for many of us, culture is first and foremost "life" itself. If a way out is to be found it would be logical to look towards youth because the future belongs to them. It is thus hardly surprising that the EEC itself is turning its attention to this matter and has commissioned a study on "Student attitudes and the European cultural dimension". (Font: Introducció)
