SeminariPublication details: Strasbourg : Council of Europe, 1990Description: 47 pSummary: The colloquy on "Cultural Identity and Regional Development" was held at Interlaken from 16 to 18 October 1989 under the auspices of the Council of Europe, the Federal Office of Culture and National Research Programme No 21 of the Swiss National Scientific Research Fund. The general aim of this meeting which was open both to scientists working on identity-related topics and to specialists in cultural organization and local development, was to explore these topics in depth, to consider the various links between them and to bring together the different standpoints represented. To ensure a methodical approach, it was decided that the colloquy should focus on four main areas, and seek: • To analyse the constituents of regional identity, • To discern the links between cultural identity and regional development, • To consider the degree to which it is possible to act on the basis of regional cultural identity, • To make recommendations aimed at those responsible for action in the cultural field. The various papers delivered by experts during the colloquy were aimed at making all participants more aware of the actual situations in the areas concerned and also of the more general questions related to these four main aims. The discussions were intended to permit exchanges not only between the floor and the speakers, but also between all members of the audience, thus ensuring that the rich experience and varied views represented by the participants were put to maximum use.
