Summary: The conference aimed to create an event in which different views and perspectives could be aired and heard, new connections be made and shared bases for action discovered. The conference set itself five broad fundamental aims: • To debate the nature of 'British cultural heritage' and its selectivity - and the need to redefine both; • To allow people space to explore the implications that a shift of view would take - for artists, administrators and those involved in museums and heritage; • To focus - via smaller groups - on specific mechanisms whereby artists and arts groups can refine their practice, and feed their skills and perspectives into the heritage arena; • To explore possibilities of new partnerships and structural changes that could open up better channels of communication between artists and museums and heritage managers, funding bodies and so on; • To investigate ways in which artists can develop a personal expression of cultural identity and creative heritage.
