Audience development : Towards a strategic mindset
Summary: Audience development is an amorphous concept that describes a wide range of activities with varied outcomes that are achieved utilising one or a blend of skill sets. Essentially it is concerned with changing the structure and composition of audiences to achieve democratic participation in the arts and to engender greater levels of trust and commitment (loyalty) among existing and fledgling audience groups. Decisions concerning audience development priorities and approaches are inevitably complex, requiring practitioners to balance their personal philosophies against a myriad of other factors including government cultural policy, the organisational context and objectives and existing patterns of participation.
