Summary: Culture-Cates presents the results of a 15 month transnational research project sponsored under the EU Programme Relating to the Community Framework Strategy on Gender Equality (2001-2005). The project received additional support from the Austrian Ministry for Education, Science and Culture, the Finnish Ministry for Education and Culture, the Portuguese Observatorio das Actividades Culturais and the North Rhine-Westphalia Ministry of Urban Development and Housing, Culture and Sports. Co-ordinated by ERICarts, the project was realised in partnership with FinnEKVIT (Helsinki), MEDIACULT (Vienna) and the Observatorio das Actividades Culturais (Lisbon). Together they undertook national studies including empirical stocktaking and qualitative analysis to reveal, for the first time, gate-keeping mechanisms in the cultural field and the impact it has on the career development of women. The sub-fields of music and (new) media arts were selected as case studies to illustrate the gates which are open or act as a hurdle to reach levels of "success" in their careers. Together with contributions from Germany and Italy, these results are examined in European comparison. Culture-Cates brings transparency about the position of female artists and professionals working in the cultural field at a time when a new EU Directive on achieving equality of women and men is being considered.
