Summary: Catalonia: National ldentity and Cultural Policy, 1980- 2003 discusses the cultural policy of the Catalan Autonomous Government under the leadership of Jordi Pujol and his party, in power from 1980 to 2003. Examining issues of national identity and cultural nationalism in the context of globalization, multiculturalism and the commodification of culture, the book looks at how Pujol’s government attempted to tackle these challenges. This is a detailed analysis of language policy, literature, theatre, cinema, television, traditional culture, the cultural industries and cultural policy regarding immigration. The author asks whether the admiration for Pujol and Catalonia shown by other regional governments in the West is justified or whether their high-profile achievements in language and culture actually conceal critical failures in their cultural policy. This is the only book in English that gives a comprehensive review of Catalan cultural policy during this period. Held to be one of the more successful of Europe's regions in maintaining and promoting its individual identity, this timely study examines how effectively cultural policy was deployed to achieve this reputation.
