Resumen Today most people live in cities and larger urban areas - at the global level 50% and at the EU level 80%. In other words, today cities constitute a mix of people, cultural and social life and different important societal functions such as trade, investments, education, knowledge. Consequently, cities are the primary 'destinations of globalisation' and it is especially in the cities that demand and supply with respect to know-how, investments, labour, cross- and intercultural communications, etc. have increased - across national borders. This explains why the majority of people of foreign origin and ethnic minorities - like the rest of the population - live in cities and larger urban areas.
Urban development and migration have become two highly interrelated phenomena, just as cultural diversity can be described in a sense as an urban fact. Migration not only meets the needs of cities in a globalised world but also enriches urban social and cultural life, the architectural design, etc. And in some of the world's mega-cities the diversity of cultures has actually become an important part of the urban identity. Cultural diversity can be seen as a trademark that makes the city more attractive to international investments, tourism, etc.
The overall aim of the booklet 'Cultural Diversity in European Cities' is to contribute to and advance /promote co-operation and efforts to enhance cultural diversity and urban policy within the EU - at the community level, national level and city level. The purpose is also to present the experiences gained so far and to give some recommendations on how to go on with the work.
The booklet identifies specific opportunities, challenges and barriers to cultural diversity in European cities and on this basis presents the state of the art. The focus is especially on the consequences of urban segregation, access to the labour market, social urban life, etc. and the importance of citizen participation and inclusion of the civil society.
