NOTA DE RESUMEN |
Think of George Steiner, Raymond Williams, Anthony Giddens, A. H. Halsey, John Berger, Mary Douglas, Eric Hobsbawm, Basil Bernstein, E. H. Gombrich, Ernest Gellner, John Lyons and Richard Hoggart. For more than 30 years, the work of Pierre Bourdieu has touched on all of the fields associated with the names in this list, and more besides. He has not been a systematizer but, instead, an untiring investigator of social phenomena, whether of fashion or of religion, of politics or law, of cultural taste or language, of sport or museums, of photography or universities. He has not been a systematizer because he has not wanted to consecrate an account of 'society' which might become an object of reverence and exegesis as part of a sociological 'canon' sustained by a privileged minority of intellectuals. He has always remembered the time when, as a young researcher, an Algerian grocer said to him: 'You tell him, your professor, that heaps of books like that have already been written. That doesn't change anything. That's no use'. As a result, Bourdieu has tried to recommend to everyone a process of reflection on their situations and on the possibilities for effecting social change which may be at their disposal. <br/>This is the first book in English to introduce readers to the full scope of Bourdieu's research and writing; and, at the same time, it preserves the spirit of his endeavour. It traces the development of Bourdieu's thinking from the early Sociologie de I'Algérie (1958) to La Noblesse d'état (1989) and, in doing so, contextualizes the production of all the works which are now accessible in English translation. The intention is that by concentrating on Bourdieu's practice the book will encourage readers to undertake themselves the kind of 're-thinking' of their social relations which may amount to a 'recognition' of their particular societies.
