Historically, the arts in the United Kingdom have relied more on the market and less on public subsidy than in many other European arid Scandinavian countries. This tendency has increased during the 1980s and early 1990s, as successive governments have sought to cut back public expenditure.<br/><br/>What impact has this had on cultural policy? Have cultural organisations become more commercial? If so, does this threaten the future vitality of the arts, as many critics claim? Or, as others have argued, have these organisations now been forced to engage more closely with the interests of audiences?<br/><br/>What has been the impact on UK cultural management? What new strategies have been developed? Have cultural managers become more efficient, competitive and business-like? Or, have social goals been sacrificed to economic imperatives? Has sponsorship delivered what it promised? In short, what are now the distinguishing features of British approaches to cultural policy and management? And how do they compare to other European models?<br/><br/>These questions formed the background to an international symposium, held at the University of Warwick from September 16th to 18th 1994. Attended by 126 participants from 23 different countries, the symposium addressed five key themes: <br/>• Business Sponsorship<br/>• Programming and Marketing<br/>• Cultural Diversity<br/>• The Arts and Economic Development<br/>• The Press, Broadcasting and the Arts.
