Why do museums need a forward plan? How should an effective plan be made? The first step in the path to modem management is the preparation of a forward plan. Museums and other heritage bodies are under considerable pressure to change and develop their management procedures in order to respond to changing times and new problems. Limited funding and increased competition add to this pressure, placing managers 'in the hot seat'. Development of a business plan is a crucial stage in taking a clear view of current problems and future solutions and is increasingly required by funding bodies.
