Resumen | The study of music in its social context has expended rapidly in recent years. Yet little of this new work examines the nature of the music itself: the processes, textures and structures of sound which so powerfully affect us as individuals. <br/>Music as Social Text aims to fill this gap. It shows why many of our dominant intellectual frameworks are ill-suited to understanding the distinctive properties of music, and it develops an exciting new approach for the social analysis of music as sound. <br/>Shepherd uses this approach to analyse the meanings of 'classical' music as well as the various forms of 'popular' music which have emerged in the twentieth century. Among other things, he shows how the timbre or tone quality of both classical and popular music is capable of communicating cultural messages concerned with gender identity. <br/>This unique book, which integrates social and cultural theory with work in musicology and the sociology of music, will be of particular interest to students in media and cultural studies, sociology and musicology.
