Resumen | The future of the nation lies in the young. We have a responsibility to ensure that they understand the environment into which they are born, and that they have every opportunity to develop their skills, talents and their personal potential and characters. The arts provide an important channel for this development and so it is right that this document focuses on the young.
New developments will widen choice, engage communities and tap the skills and interest of young people. Not every work of art or artistic production may be to our personal taste, but we are able to choose from an array of artistic talents and skills. Communities are now able to have a direct say in how money should be spent on the arts.

Chances to enjoy the arts should be available throughout life. I am pleased that arts organisations recognise that education does not stop at a particular age. They continue to reach the widest possible audience.

The Government is committed to public funding of the arts. I welcomed the recent report of the National Heritage Select Committee which reaffirmed this principle. The arts also gain strength from funding from other sources. Plurality of funding helps to sustain diversity; the ability to bring people together to form creative partnerships. I value the independence of artistic production and development. These factors ensure that the arts remain lively, stimulating and entertaining. The National Lottery has released an unprecedented flow of funds into the arts and provides enormous encouragement to this whole process. In Britain, we are creating a sense of renaissance in the arts, matching a resurgence in creativity in the country.

I recognise the dedication and commitment to the arts set out in the following pages. Our flagship arts organisations and training institutions are able to compete with the best anywhere. The artistic talent of this country carries the reputation for excellence of the arts in this country around the world. We have a flourishing network of artistic activity around the country, encompassing the commercial, subsidised and voluntary sectors and a wide range of people of whom it can truly be said that the arts enrich their lives. This document begins the story. In addition to practical recommendations for action, it promotes a continuing debate about the arts in this country. I shall set up a new forum for this purpose. The debate - like the arts themselves - will be lively and stimulating. (Font: Editor) |
