Resumen |
Our culture embodies the spirit of the innovative and creative nation that Britain has always been and must continue to be if we are to have a more prosperous future. Our cultural industries are integral to Britain's future economic success. They also give us our sense of identity, define us and articulate our values, beliefs and traditions.
The arts open up our minds and our imaginations, make us wonder and question, delight us, disturb us, challenge us and sometimes change us.
They also promote our sense of community and common purpose.
Our cultural life is one of the aspects of Britain most renowned throughout the world. Yet successive Conservative governments have considered it of minimal social and economic importance. It has been seen in Whitehall as something which we do in the margins of our lives, to relax, or at the weekend. It is regarded as an optional extra of little political, economic or social consequence.
We strongly dissent from that view. We believe that the quality of our arts and cultural industries, our creative talents exemplify the Age of Achievement which will be the hallmark of the next Labour government. They are central to the task of re-establishing a sense of community, of identity and of civic pride, the undermining of which has so damaged our society. They are vital to the creation of jobs and the growth of our economy. The creative and media industries worldwide are growing rapidly - we must grasp the opportunities presented.
Cultural industries thrive on ideas and images. The strengths of our artists and writers, directors and animators, technicians and craftspeople, designers and architects, give us unique opportunities to strengthen our economic and social wellbeing.
We need a new approach to cultural policy which matches the strengths of the private sector cultural industries with the responsibilities of the public sector. In a Labour government, every ministry will be expected to make a contribution to achieving to goals of our cultural policy. (Font: Introducció) |
