The conference "Artists, Responsibility and Solidarity" was held at the Chateau du Lac, Genval, close to Brussels, Belgium on May 16-17 1997. The conference was organized by the European Council of Artists (ECA). <br/><br/>The preliminary headlines of the ECA conference presented in the invitation letter were: Between Chaos and Renewal-The Unavoidable Option of Cultural Diversity; The Outsider as the Insider-Why Western Europe Can Never Be a Closed Shop; Adaptation, Resignation or Revitalization-Remaining an Artist in the Face of Global Commercialization; The Right to be Reticent-Why Artistic Integrity Should Be Carefully Guarded; The Beauty of Being Small-Fringe Nations as the Core of Europe; Escaping From the Politics of Ends and Means-Can the Arts Be Relegitimized?; Devolution of Culture-a Safe Road to Shabbiness. <br/><br/>Nearly 50 professional artists, researchers, officials and ECA representatives from more than 20 European countries participated in the conference.
