Resumen: This paper is intended to provide a critical overview of the state of our understanding of the visual-arts sector in Canada. It focuses primarily on analytical and empirical research into the current socioprofessional realities in this sector: living and working conditions, the factors affecting training and dissemination, funding, marketing and consumption, and the situations for the various categories of stakeholders involved in the sector, be they individuals (artists, critics, dealers, curators, teachers, collectors, art audiences) or groups (museums, galleries, professional associations and other institutions, organizations or companies devoted to the visual arts). This paper will also attempt to identify the most relevant current data on the development of the visual-arts sector and its various components. It will also identify gaps in the data and propose certain measures designed to bridge them. This analysis and critical summary of the relevant literature should provide the members of the Visual Arts Alliance with directions as to the best ways of gathering such strategic information.
