Resumen: The articles published in this reader represent a selection of some of the best work published in Media, Culture and Society from 1979 to 1985. The journal has not only published some of the finest theoretical work in communication and cultural studies, but has also pioneered a unique approach to the analysis of the media which offers a stimulating alternative to both the traditional empirical 'effects' school and Althusserian marxism. The work is grouped into three parts, each of which is preceded by an introductory essay which helps the student to understand the issues presented in the articles and places some of the theoretical contributions within their historical context. Part One, 'Approaches to Cultural Theory', makes two key points. First, the mass media are always specific historical examples of a range of institutional means by which symbolic forms, and the meanings they carry and create, are produced, distributed and consumed. Second, any analysis of the mass media must be based upon general social theories. The development of the social division of labour has endowed a specific social group, intellectuals, with the task of running these specialized institutions of cultural production and distribution. Part Two, 'Intellectuals and Cultural Production', examines the constitution and social role of this group and analyses its relationship both to cultural consumers and to other centres of social power. Part Three, 'British Broadcasting and the Public Sphere', offers concrete examples of the more general theoretical positions of the first two parts. Thus, contemporary policy analysis is firmly and intimately linked to the widest theoretical and historical concerns. This book will be an invaluable guide to the influential critical tradition of media studies and a welcome asset to teachers of communication and sociology of culture courses. (Font: Editor)
