Resumen: Marxism and the Interpretation of Culture brings together contributions from leading writers and scholars working on five continents in a very bread range of disciplines to provide a unique contribution to the constitution of a unified field of Cultural Studies. The book is based on papers presented at a series of major interlinked courses and conferences held at the University of Illinois in the summer of 1983 which have been substantially reworked to take account of discussion and debate at these events. To these have been added contributions by people who were unable to attend or to present papers at the time. Taken together the essays mark a definitive realignment in the conceptual framework of Western Marxism and testify to the vitality of its analysis of culture. Their juxtaposition highlights emerging areas of common ground as well as pinpointing inconsistencies at one and the same time mapping and intervening within the contested terrain the book explores.
