Resumen: The years 1989 and 1990 were tumultuous ones for the arts in America. First, a traveling exhibit supported by the National Endowment for the Arts attracted a storm of public and congressional protest. The chief target of the outrage was a photograph by Andres Serrano of a crucifix submerged in urine. Critics said it showed that their taxpayer dollars were funding obscene and offensive images. Then the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington canceled an exhibit of photographs by Robert Mapplethorpe, several of which were thought to be homoerotic. A furious debate ensued between defenders of artistic freedom and those angry about the content of the photographs. It set the stage for a prolonged and bruising political struggle over the budgeting, and even the survival, of the federally funded NEA. This new collection, sponsored by the American Assembly, assesses the controversy and the broad questions it raises for the 1990s about the often uneasy relations between government and the arts it supports.
