But it is popular culture which has preoccupied the French themselves in the past fifty years, as the post-war project of taking high culture to the people had to be redefined in the face of profound social change. Brian Rigby's lively and cogent study traces changing notions of popular culture in France, from 1936 - the year of the Popular Front - to the present day.
