Resumen: This book attempts to demonstrate that there have been and are a number of different forms of musical activity-many "musics" -which differ not only in how tonal material is used and how the music is structured but also in the role musical activity plays in social life. Sociology seeks to trace the factors that determine musical activity and behavior: material and spiritual, economic, political, and many others. This task requires an interdisciplinary approach, since the answers to many questions must be taken from anthropology, communication research, psychoacoustics, room acoustics, and a number of other disciplines in addition to sociology and musicology. The sociology of music is still a young, somewhat rudimentary discipline. It is therefore necessary to assess the possible benefits to be derived from the ideas developed by the nineteenth-century founding fathers of sociology and their followers. It appears that thought in the sociology of art and music has evolved, over approximately 150 years, in a single direction: from philosophical speculation to empirically supported science. This account, however, does not concentrate solely on theory but seeks to deal with the subject itself, the musics. An excursion into the history of socio-musicology is combined with an examination of the social mutations of musical life, up to the recent changes brought about by the electronic media. The author offers a theoretical concept of the present "mediamorphosis" of music that enables the reader to evaluate this worldwide mutation that affects the creation, the production, the dissemination, and the consumption of music in an unprecedented manner.
