The first part briefly presents the tourism situation in Palestine. The second part presents the role played by the national, and local authorities in the promotion of cultural tourism. The third part will present a description and evaluation of the development of cultural tourism in three cases: rehabilitation of Bethlehem, traditional art museums and handicrafts. The fourth part will present concrete proposals for strengthening the positive aspects of the culture/tourism partnership, based on the analysis and evaluation described in the three cases discussed in the third part. There is a list of recommendations and projects at the end of this publication which includes a wide variety of suggestions which need to be followed up. I hope that many of those working to improve the prospects of cultural tourism in the West Bank and Gaza, including tourism officials, planners and others will find time to read it and benefit from the detailed points which are raised. Their application of sound planning practice can then provide the basis for successful tourism development.
