Resumen: Researchers in cultural economics and related disciplines have over the last ten years shown increasing interest in the economic functions of artists, the economic and policy implications of their behaviour when facing economic incentives and constraints, as well as cultural policy practices towards artists and art institutions. An international Workshop to discuss these issues was held in Helsinki in August 1997. The Workshop was organised by the Arts Council of Finland, Association for Cultural Economics International and the University of Jyvaskyla/Cultural Management. The publication consists of a selection of papers presented at the Helsinki Workshop. The papers discuss different aspects of the topic of the Workshop, such as artists' labour market, professional training in the arts, arts policy, as well as funding and management of art institutions.
